Everyone loves a clean bed!  In fact, people report they have a better night’s sleep the night after they wash their bedding. Mega-star Oprah Winfrey has admitted she likes to have her sheets changed every two days because after that they lose their ‘crispness’.

Let your bed be a clean oasis of tranquility!

While we aren’t going to argue that, we’re assuming you don’t have a full-time staff to wash and iron your sheets on a thrice-weekly rotating schedule, so you don’t have to feel bad if your bedding isn’t as crisp as a millionaire’s. But, since clean sheets are delightful, we’re going to offer some tips on how to keep your bedding at its best.


If you have a pet or two (or four) and they sleep in your bed, keeping your bed clean will be more challenging. If you can’t (or don’t want to) break them of sleeping in your bed, get a fuzzy sleep pad for pets  to protect your bedding. Even animals who don’t shed have a tendency to clean themselves, which is not conducive to keeping your bed fresh.

If you get sick

If you or your bedmate is having a bout of flu, a cold, a skin condition, or other illness, wash the bedding every other day, not only so your bed will be clean, but also so your bed won’t become a breeding ground for ickies.

Eating in bed

Snacking in bed is a quick way to make a clean bed dirty! Crumbs may also bring pests. Save snacking for the kitchen or dining room.

Pajamas or none?

If you wear pajamas, your bed will stay cleaner. For bed results, change into clean pajamas every third day, and if you sweat, change them more often.

For best results:

  • If you don’t already have a set schedule, replace sheets a minimum of once a week.
  • Clean your mattress according to the manufacterer’s directions.
  • Keep the area around (under over, behind) the bed clean so dirt can’t sneak into the bed.
  • Take a shower before bed and make sure your feet are clean when you get into bed. If you don’t shower, wash your hands and face before bed.
  • Have a minimum of two spare sheet sets for each bed in the home. While many people have more, two additional sets will get you through the worst of an illness.You may want to have extra sheets if you have teenagers because bedding can spread some types of bacteria and worsen acne.
  • If your sheets become worn or frayed, they won’t stay as clean or be as comfortable. Animal shelters are always looking for donations of old bedding.
  • Try not the use your bed as a staging area to sort dirty clothes or paperwork.
  • Keep moisture away from sheets. For example, try not to keep dirty hankies or tissue in the bed.
  • 140-degree temperature is hot enough to kill dust mites. Dust mite and their accompanying waste can cling and add weight to pillows and bedding, which is why a mattress protector is so essential.
  • If your sheets won’t handle a high temperature, antibacterial laundry soap is recommended. You can buy it, or make it with this recipe:

Homemade Laundry soap (Use 1-3 TBSP per load)

1 bar of shaved bar soap such as Fels Naptha
1 cup of borax
1 cup of washing soda
7 drops of natural tea tree oil (for disinfecting – optional)
¼ cup Oxi Clean (optional)
